Session Ident: #glitchpc
[00:00] * Now talking in #glitchpc
[00:00] * Topic is 'Welcome to #glitchpc chat. Profanity, trolls, and impersonation are not welcome here. Street1 has become a Silent Keyboard. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/savannah/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=139870551'
[00:00] * Set by jacky on Tue Mar 02 11:03:23
[07:16] * jamer (uid12136@mib-DEE87C23.irccloud.com) has joined #glitchpc
[07:27] * PCdoc (PCdoc@C8D7B677.B19CBEC.EE292452.IP) has joined #glitchpc
[08:17]<jamer> Db logic again
[09:51]<@BC_Programming> well Fedex Tracking sucks
[09:52]<@BC_Programming> I'm starting to suspect our old neighbors did not in fact steal my packages last year
[09:59] * PCdoc (PCdoc@C8D7B677.B19CBEC.EE292452.IP) has left #glitchpc (Leaving)
[10:05]<Quantos> What did you have stolen?
[10:06]<Quantos> Oh, Happy B-
[10:06]<Quantos> Day BC
[10:06]<@BC_Programming> I don't know what it was
[10:06]<@BC_Programming> it was a prize from a contest
[10:06]<+camerongray> jamer: Ahh yeah, that was a good bit of his logic :P
[10:06]<Quantos> Ah
[10:06]<Quantos> What was where now Cam?
[10:06]<+camerongray> jamer: Going by that, my laptop must have a max temp of 15c :P
[10:06]<@BC_Programming> I think it was a fancy wireless Mouse, but for all I know it could have been an Xbox 360
[10:06]<+camerongray> Quantos: DB's logic earlier that the TDP number of a CPUis it's max temp
[10:07]<+camerongray> Came out that an i5 (35w TDP) has a max temp of 35c
[10:07]<@BC_Programming> Thermal Dissipation Potential?
[10:07]<Quantos> DOH
[10:07]<+camerongray> Yeah
[10:07]<Quantos> That means my little core2duo is massively overheating
[10:07]<+camerongray> haha
[10:07] * Quantos runs around waving his arms
[10:08]<+camerongray> And my laptop must be on fire right now since the room is even hotter
[10:08]<@BC_Programming> wait I did that wrong
[10:08]<Quantos> Wha? Unheard of
[10:08]<@BC_Programming> I should have asked, I should have said "I know what TDP is, I manage 1000 TDP computers"
[10:08]<@BC_Programming> first should should be shouldn't*
[10:08]<Quantos> LOL
[10:08]<Quantos> Okay BC
[10:08]<@BC_Programming> In fact I'm in charge of our companies entire TDP department
[10:09]<+camerongray> BAHAHA
[10:09]<@BC_Programming> It
[10:09]<@BC_Programming> It is funny because you can almost see DB doing something like it
[10:09]<Quantos> It sounds so techie when you put it like that
[10:09]<@BC_Programming> while hiding in "Windows Workspace"
[10:09]<Quantos> ;)
[10:10]<@BC_Programming> Fedex apparently is terrible at predicting arrival times
[10:10]<Quantos> What did he think TDP meant, Temperatur Didn't Plummet?
[10:10]<Quantos> err temperature
[10:12]<+camerongray> DB basically sees bits of things and tries to stick them together
[10:12]<Quantos> With string, and scotch tape(you can relate to scotch tape, right?), and the wishes of little children...
[10:13]<@BC_Programming> pretty sure the Watt has some time scale involved, like a watt is something to do with Joules and amperes over a second or something
[10:13]<Quantos> Get it, scotch?
[10:13]<+camerongray> haha yeha
[10:13]<@BC_Programming> and puppydog pails
[10:13]<@BC_Programming> that's right pails
[10:13]<Quantos> I think you're bang on there BC, there has to be a rate factor to it somewhere
[10:13]<+camerongray> The TDP is basically the max power it can reasonably draw
[10:13]<Quantos> Oh, a pail of puppies
[10:16]<+camerongray> I love how DB always runs away quickly after he mucks up
[10:16]<@BC_Programming> "Client call!"
[10:16]<Quantos> You mean like guest 04?
[10:16]<+camerongray> haha, yeah
[10:17]<Quantos> What a putz
[10:17]<@BC_Programming> oh enlighten me
[10:17]<jamer> camerongray he just left .. Didnt wven say anything
[10:17]<+camerongray> I mean, 04 was an honest mistake
[10:17]<+camerongray> DB just made crap up
[10:17]<@BC_Programming> ahh like "Windows Workspace" that was a true classic
[10:17]<+camerongray> Yeah
[10:18]<Quantos> Fill me in, I missed that one
[10:18]<@BC_Programming> I think I saved the log somewhere
[10:18]<Quantos> http://mibpaste.com/OUTxEO Here you go BC, guest 04
[10:18]<+camerongray> I have no idea how he's still op
[10:19]<Quantos> Sorry guys, I can't comment on that one
[10:19]<+camerongray> All I can imagine is that he works in tech support so is used to just making stuff up to get people off his back then hates it when people like me don't believe his junk
[10:20]<+camerongray> Quantos: You saw when patio accidentally slagged off DB to his face?
[10:20]<Quantos> No
[10:20]<+camerongray> Oh, it was brilliant
[10:20]<Quantos> Got the log?
[10:20]<+camerongray> Yeah
[10:20]<Quantos> I'd love to see that
[10:20]<+camerongray> http://pastebin.com/ypkxtu0j
[10:21]<+camerongray> Patio was using Mibbit so didn't see the hostmasks on join/quit
[10:21]<@BC_Programming> http://www.bc-programming.com/misc/workspace.txt
[10:21]<@BC_Programming> oh
[10:21]<Quantos> LOL, that's hilarious
[10:23]<@BC_Programming> bahaha that's hilarious
[10:23]<@BC_Programming> I like "hit and run bad advice" and then DB quits
[10:24]<@BC_Programming> finishing the second requirement
[10:25]<@BC_Programming> my monitor has been sitting in Richmond since 2PM yesterday
[10:26]<Quantos> Yeap, that was funny
[10:26]<Quantos> So is the workspace
[10:27]<Quantos> So how young are you now BC?
[10:27]<@BC_Programming> 27
[10:28]<Quantos> I kind of thought you were just turning 25, not sure where I got that idea from
[10:28]<jamer> Im the youngest here ..
[10:29]<Quantos> Yeap, wet behind the ears ;)
[10:29]<Quantos> J/K
[10:29]<@BC_Programming> Allegedly Fedex does saturday deliveries
[10:29]<@BC_Programming> we shall see
[10:29]<Quantos> Cool
[10:30]<@BC_Programming> at least UPS's predictions are more accurate
[10:30]<Quantos> I've never had a problem with UPS
[10:30]<@BC_Programming> yeah
[10:30]<@BC_Programming> me either, only FedEx
[10:30]<Quantos> I love how easy it is to ship international with them
[10:30]<@BC_Programming> I think it's local
[10:30]<@BC_Programming> like they have incompetent people in this area or something maybe
[10:30]<Quantos> I'm used to having to do my own logistics, but they took care of it all for me
[10:32]<@BC_Programming> I know for a fact they sometimes don't even try to deliver something, they just leave the door tag
[10:32]<Quantos> Yeap, I wouldn't be surprised
[10:33]<@BC_Programming> I had to wait outside to get my MVP award package... the delivery guy for the prize claimed it was 'in the bushes' yeah. sure. That's why you left no door tag and no indication that it was delivered... and why it was nowhere to be found
[10:42]<Quantos> Ugh, incompetence is rampant eh?
[10:42]<@BC_Programming> that wsa the prize package, never found it
[10:42]<@BC_Programming> so I waited outside when I saw "out for delivery" on the tracking info for the award package
[10:44]<Quantos> the delivery guy probably stole it
[10:44]<@BC_Programming> twas my suspicion as well
[10:44]<@BC_Programming> well at least it is now
[10:45]<@BC_Programming> we didn't get along with our previous neighbors and we know they stole some other packages, but now I'm wondering
[10:49]<Quantos> I hate thieves
[10:50]<@BC_Programming> well I'm expecting it should be here either today, or Monday
[10:50]<@BC_Programming> naturally I prefer today, what so I can use it over this weekend
[10:51]<+camerongray> I've never had parcels stolen but one of the couriers here (Yodel, look up reviews for them) constantly deliver to the wrong place
[10:51]<Quantos> Nice
[10:52]<+camerongray> I live in xyz Road which is perpendicular to a street just called xyz - They constantly deliver to the same number on xyz instead of xyz Road
[10:52]<@BC_Programming> hmm for the prize package, I know they tried to deliver once, because there was the delivery failure thing
[10:52]<@BC_Programming> well to be fair camerongray that is kind of understandable
[10:52]<Quantos> Yeah, I've had that happen, I live on 105 A Avenue, my parcels frequently end up at 105 Ave
[10:53]<+camerongray> Yodel subcontract a lot of their work out - Basically if you can drive you can deliver for them
[10:53]<Quantos> Now they just phone me when a parcel arrives
[10:53]<+camerongray> So a lot of the couriers don't actually know where places are
[10:53]<@BC_Programming> nothing confusing about my address
[10:53]<+camerongray> UK streets are so confusing
[10:54]<+camerongray> One of the streets next to the uni changes name like 3 times as you go along it
[10:54]<@BC_Programming> heh the Island Highway that goes through town changes to "Terminal Avenue" downtown and then to "Nicol Street" in the core
[10:54]<@BC_Programming> I can only guess that is to confuse people
[10:54]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, this is like that
[10:55]<+camerongray> "South Bridge" then changes to "Nicholson Street" then to "Clerk Street"
[10:55]<+camerongray> Oh, and it changes to "Minto Street" even later
[10:55]<+camerongray> Not sure what it changes to after that
[10:56]<@BC_Programming> and of course on South Bridge there are side streets called PCI, ISA, USB...
[10:56]<+camerongray> haha!
[10:56]<+camerongray> Oh, forgot about that - The very end of it is also called North Bridge
[10:57]<@BC_Programming> heh your area is a motherboard
[10:57]<+camerongray> And the one parallel to that starts off as "Lauriston Place", changes to "Potterrow" then to "Buccleuch Street" then "Causewayside" then something else
[10:58]<+camerongray> And my flat has loads of different numbers
[10:58]<+camerongray> 13/3, 13 Flat 3, 13 GFL, 13 PF3, 13 PFL
[10:58]<+camerongray> Oh, and 13 GF3
[10:59]<@BC_Programming> I just realized
[10:59]<@BC_Programming> when I order pizza for delivery
[10:59]<@BC_Programming> I don't think I've ever gotten a "Delivery failure notification"
[10:59]<+camerongray> lol
[11:00]<@BC_Programming> But I also tip them like 5 bucks every time
[11:00]<@BC_Programming> well it used to be 5 bucks but I changed to 2.50 because reasons
[11:05]<@BC_Programming> ooooh I know why it went to memphis from anchorage
[11:05]<@BC_Programming> memphis is like their Fedex grand central station

[11:30]<Quantos> I just did some more reading on the 'Windows Workspace', checked Coops link, that says 'hardware reserved' not 'software reserved'. It's probably for drivers and such, maybe a bit of overhead, but I sure don't see any reason for windows to hide memory for a secret workspace
[11:31]<@BC_Programming> technically the 32-bit Windows kernel supports a maximum of 4GB of address space. That means absolutely everything has t obe in that space- including the Memory Address mappings for all drivers and shared Graphics memory and whatnot
[11:31]<Quantos> Yeap
[11:31]<Quantos> I follow that much
[11:31]<@BC_Programming> that's why on 32-bit versions with 4GB+ of RAM it's usually 4GB sans around 512MB or so
[11:31]<Quantos> Yeah
[11:31]<@BC_Programming> it's certainly not windows reserving it, which is primarily what I took issue with at the time
[11:32]<Quantos> Yeah, he should know better than that, say what you mean and mean what you say right?
[11:33]<@BC_Programming> In that case the user had a integrated graphics card so it was using shared memory
[11:34]<Quantos> Yea
[11:34]<Quantos> I caught that part
[11:35]<@BC_Programming> I really got into it early on when his sole rebuttal to my explanation was "That's BS"
[11:37]<Quantos> LOL
[11:37]<Quantos> Too funny
[11:37]<Quantos> Way too funny
[11:46] * Mjulreay (mulreay@mib-A8574BC0.cable.virginm.net) has joined #glitchpc
[11:47] * Mjulreay is now known as PixelsintheBlood
[11:47] * PixelsintheBlood is now known as Mulreay
[11:57]<Mulreay> Today was officially 'Nightmare on my street' I do live on a road but that wouldn't have worked in the title
[11:58]<@BC_Programming> did a garbage truck blow up, sending garbage everywhere?
[11:58]<Mulreay> worse and to be fair tghat would have been cool
[11:58]<Mulreay> that*
[12:00]<Mulreay> My PC turned off overnight (I will never know why) and then this morning I thought 'how strange as updates are off'. Then the true nighmare begins.. dom dom derrrrrrrrr
[12:03]<Quantos> Well, off to get the gf, back later guys
[12:03]<Quantos> Hiya Mulreay
[12:03]<@BC_Programming> but you'll miss the best part
[12:03]<@BC_Programming> the exciting conclusion! Was it a celery stick? A POTATO? Now you will never know
[12:03]<Quantos> I can wait a minute or two ;)
[12:06]<Mulreay> (quick version) Windows boots to a black screen with just a cursor flashing.. so I try a BIOS boot order change but my keyboard and mouse won't work in BIOS. So I think OK try a windows refresh.. but the system won't recognise the drive and says it's 'locked'. So I unplug the two other drives incase windows has forgotten the boot/partition sequence.. no joy. I then try to do a fresh install
[12:06]<Mulreay> on the new 3tb drive but windows could not create a partition.. aty this point I'm throwing things after restarting the PC about 50 times.. then suddenly out of left field the MoBo tells me that the BIOS is corrupted and then procedes to repair it.. no word of a lie about 3hrs of cursing, crying and fist shaking
[12:07]<jamer> Getting 3 2gb ddr2 ram :D
[12:08]<Quantos> I had something similar happen Mulreay
[12:08]<@BC_Programming> well there goes my VPN connection, goodbye WO memo
[12:09]<Quantos> A friend was having a hard time installing windows on his new computer, so I went over to help him out. The install would almost finish, then go to a black screen and the computer would reboot
[12:09]<Quantos> Installation would begin again. We did this for about four hours. He had his two drives set up as RAID in the BIOS
[12:10]<Quantos> I quickly fixed that and put a password on his BIOS to keep him out of trouble
[12:10]<Quantos> It was infuriating though
[12:11]<Mulreay> There was far more involved but that was the quick version.. there were the GPU not seated correctly depacle and many more fun things to get angry about
[12:11]<Quantos> LOL
[12:11]<jamer> Lol
[12:11]<Quantos> Aren't computers fun though/
[12:11]<Quantos> ?
[12:11]<jamer> Better then a psu that was screwed in wrong
[12:12]<Mulreay> I love fixing these things it's the pure frustration then a release when you get something right that keeps me from buying a typewriter
[12:13]<Mulreay> BC_Programming what is your favourite episode of Stargate or Star Trek? I need some background distraction
[12:14]<Quantos> Well, I'm off, once again, have a good day guys
[12:15]<@BC_Programming> >:( I want my package dammit
[12:55]<Mulreay> I don't remember that episode.. searching...
[12:55]<Mulreay> Picard is in deep space and want's his damn package

[19:48]<+camerongray> Kids these days :P
[19:49]<+camerongray> grep BC_Programming
[19:49]<@BC_Programming> I'm apparently now fending off an attack from VB6 programmers, maybe that's what they were
[19:49]<+camerongray> You better be scared, I grepped you
[19:49]<@BC_Programming> yeah somebody spammed my blog with some dumb article about how VB6 is the bestest or whatever
[19:49]<@BC_Programming> and I absolutely destroyed the arguments as best I could within the limited space
[19:50]<+camerongray> Link?
[19:50]<@BC_Programming> and then suddenly I had people commenting all over my youtube channel and stuff
[19:50]<@BC_Programming> http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/710181/Visual-Basic-A-giant-more-powerful-than-ever
[19:50]<@BC_Programming> I'm in the comments, assuming it wasn't deleted
[19:50]<@BC_Programming> I'm working on a piece by piece breakdown of all the inaccuracies and false statements in the article as a blog post
[19:51]<+camerongray> haha yeah, that's ridiculous
[19:52]<@BC_Programming> I rather liked my point about how it cites a bunch of projects made in VB6
[19:52]<+camerongray> Pretty much everyone that went through the Scottish high school computing courses has been taught VB6, that hardly makes it the "best"
[19:52]<+camerongray> YEah
[19:52]<@BC_Programming> if somebody makes a work of art with a turd, you don't praise the turd
[19:52]<@BC_Programming> and it doesn't make it less of a turd
[19:53]<+camerongray> I also can't find any info about openstreetmap being made in VB
[19:53]<+camerongray> Especially since I've used openstreetmap
[19:54]<@BC_Programming> yeah I'm going through them all, only gone through 2 so far
[19:54]<@BC_Programming> I don't want to be mean to the devs though since they probably had nothing to do with the article right
[19:54]<+camerongray> Yeah
[19:54]<+camerongray> I can't actually see why people would want to use VB6
[19:54]<@BC_Programming> calling PhotoDemon "equivalent to Photoshop" is dead-wrong though
[19:54]<+camerongray> Other than it being very easy to start writing stuff
[19:54]<@BC_Programming> Honestly I used to think like they did
[19:55]<@BC_Programming> I got better though...
[19:55]<+camerongray> Yeah
[19:55]<@BC_Programming> When I was learning C# I realized how much of an idiot I was
[19:55]<+camerongray> I started on VB as well, but then I realised that there was more useful stuff :P
[19:55]<+camerongray> I'm mostly Python now and loving it
[19:56]<@BC_Programming> Oh I'm arguing with a Linux Youth on Minecraft forum, one of those insane die-hard types
[19:56]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah
[19:56]<+camerongray> Link?
[19:56]<+camerongray> We have a guy like that at uni
[19:56]<+camerongray> Completely obsessed with open source, but only when it suits him
[19:56]<@BC_Programming> www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2538214-free-software-how-understand/
[19:57]<@BC_Programming> actually somebody else took up my torch with them for a while
[19:57]<+camerongray> Like he plays minecraft - You know, that totally open source game :P
[19:57]<@BC_Programming> his counter-argument to the other guys quite well presented counter-points against him was "You're really stupid"
[19:58]<@BC_Programming> Damn, he showed him didn't he!
[19:58]<@BC_Programming> haha actually I missed some of these posts, they are hilarious
[19:58]<+camerongray> I love the bit about GPL not restricting people
[19:58]<@BC_Programming> " Stop say that. You're stupid. THAT PROTECTS OUR FREEDOMS. DID YOU UNDERSTAND THAT? IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, YOU'RE SO STUPID. THAT'S THE COPYLEFT, WHICH IS DESTINATED TO PROHIBIT THE FREEDOMS REMOVING."
[19:58]<@BC_Programming> what's with the caps...
[20:01]<+camerongray> Yeah, people like that are really annoying
[20:01]<+camerongray> I use open source stuff all the time, but when was the last time you heard me preach it?
[20:01]<+camerongray> Like, right now I regularly use two Windows machines (My HTPC for Silverlight and my PC at work)
[20:02]<+camerongray> But that's because I prefer using Linux, I use closed soruce software if it works better
[20:02]<@BC_Programming> Yeah I still think, that for Free Software the biggest problem is Richard Stallman
[20:02]<+camerongray> Yeah
[20:02]<+camerongray> GPL is too limiting
[20:02]<@BC_Programming> OSS advocates wouldn't have to explain him either
[20:02]<+camerongray> LGPL is better IMO
[20:03]<@BC_Programming> "well now when he said that he saw no problem with pedophilia..."
[20:03]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah :P
[20:03]<@BC_Programming> that was taken out of context!
[20:03]<@BC_Programming> "He eats his own skin"
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> "CONTEXT!"
[20:04]<+camerongray> I mean, I use Linux but I can't stand LibreOffice - I write everything using either Google Drive or LaTeX
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> I like the one where he talks about liking Parrots humping his face
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> He could be on a sitcom
[20:05]<@BC_Programming> Stallman I mean
[20:06]<+camerongray> Yeah, I really don't like him
[20:06]<+camerongray> I mean, even compare him to Torvalds
[20:06]<jamer> i think my psu is doing great on voltages ....
[20:06]<+camerongray> jamer: huh?
[20:06]<+camerongray> Torvalds looks like a pretty cool guy, Stallman is just eww
[20:07]<jamer> ^ sorry for randomness
[20:07]<@BC_Programming> http://edward.oconnor.cx/2005/04/rms love it
[20:08]<+camerongray> jamer: Was meaning what you meant :P
[20:10]<+camerongray> Yeah, Stallman is in his own little world
[20:10]<jamer> http://postimg.org/image/px68cmhzd/
[20:10]<+camerongray> Hmm, that's not good but software reporting is never accurate
[20:10]<+camerongray> You'd really need a multimeter to be sure
[20:11]<+camerongray> Same with this guy at uni - Lives entirely in a bubble
[20:11]<jamer> reports the same as motherboard
[20:11]<+camerongray> Like, he lives in academia where he has no knowledge of the real world and will only believe something if there is an academic paper on it
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> <logic type="db">but your +5 is running at 7.85, that means it will go faster!</logic>
[20:11]<+camerongray> HAHA!
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> *6.85
[20:12]<+camerongray> What PSU is it?
[20:12]<+camerongray> He;s also one of those people who can't understand (and willigly admits that he doesn't believe in such a thing as ) personal preference
[20:13]<+camerongray> And he'll tell you if you are using software that isn't the "best"
[20:13]<@BC_Programming> "Above 72 fahrenheit (22 centigrade) I find sleeping quite difficult.(If the air is dry, I can stand 23 degrees.) A little above that temperature, a strong electric fan blowing on me enables me to sleep. More than 3 degrees above that temperature, I need air conditioning to sleep."
[20:13]<+camerongray> Like when we are doing coursework - I'm using PyCharm, my friends are mostly using Gedit or SublimeText - He spends hours preaching as to why we should use EMACS
[20:13]<jamer> http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/elite-power/elite-power-460w/
[20:14]<@BC_Programming> did you reply "no thanks, I don't want to get a Lisp"
[20:14]<+camerongray> jamer: What video card?
[20:14]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: haha - I would but he has no sense of humor or logic
[20:15]<+camerongray> Put it this way - He moans that I have a job in industry and want to work in the real world rather than academia because "the industry is wrong"
[20:15]<jamer> sapphire hd4830 512mb hdmi
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> See I think that's the think though, folks like that want to live in the era before there was an industry
[20:16]<+camerongray> Yeah
[20:16]<jamer> http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=569&pid=212&psn=&lid=1&leg=0
[20:16]<@BC_Programming> I get the impression that is what Stallman is trying to capture, he got the tail-end of the MIT Model Railroad club, then people like Peter Samson and Richard Greenblatt graduated and moved on
[20:16]<+camerongray> Ahh, hmm
[20:16]<+camerongray> Do you have onboard graphics?
[20:16]<jamer> yeah
[20:17]<+camerongray> Try pulling the card and see what the voltages are like when onboard
[20:17]<jamer> ok
[20:17]<+camerongray> If they are still funny, check them with a multimeter as the reporting through software/BIOS can be pretty inaccurate
[20:18]<jamer> ok
[20:21]<jamer> Gpu is out
[20:22]<jamer> Onboard gpu sucks lol
[20:23]<jamer> Never even installed the driver for it
[20:23]<jamer> Cause i had gpu in
[20:23]<+camerongray> yeah
[20:23]<+camerongray> g2g
[20:23]<+camerongray> Basically - if the voltages get better - You are likely overloading the PSU
[20:23]<+camerongray> If they stay dodgy, look into actually testing with a proper multimeter
[20:26]<jamer> camerongray actually got worse
[20:28]<+camerongray> Ahh, very strange
[20:28]<+camerongray> You'll really need to test with a multimeter
[20:29]<+camerongray> g2g
[20:29]<jamer> Probably motherboard and voltage errors
